Letters Home: Dakota POWs After the War of 1862

Show Details

After the tragic events of the Dakota War of 1862, hundreds of Dakota remained prisoners of the U.S. Army. So great was their longing to remain connected with their families and communities that they taught themselves to write in order to send messages home. Professor Christopher Pexa of the University of Minnesota will talk about the legacy of these remarkable letters and what we can learn from them about the men who wrote them.
